5 Things First-Time Camper Van Guests Get Wrong (And What to Do Instead)

Planning your first camper van trip on Maui? It’s one of the best ways to experience the island, but there are a few common mistakes we see all the time.

Let’s make sure you avoid them:

1. Trying to Do Too Much

Many visitors try to cram everything into a few days:

  • Road to Hana

  • Haleakalā National Park

  • West Side beaches

Instead » Pick 1 - 2 key experiences per day, with a low-key or unplanned day in between for a beach visit, shopping, etc. Island life is best enjoyed at a slower pace.

2. Not Understanding Overnight Parking

You can’t just park anywhere and sleep in your van on Maui (or any other island for that matter).

Instead » Plan ahead with designated camping areas or approved overnight spots. This keeps your trip stress-free (and respectful to our local communities, too).

3. Ignoring the Wind + Weather Patterns

Maui has microclimates, and they matter to your activity planning!

  • North Shore = windier in the afternoon; winter swells can cause big waves along North Shore beaches

  • South Side = sunnier and drier; best to still plan for morning beach visits, as wind is likely to pick up

  • Central + East Side = rainier in winter, which can affect trail access for your planned hikes

Instead » Plan beach time in the morning and stay flexible in the afternoon; always check the weather radar, as well as local resources for the best advice on where to go/avoid.

4. Overbooking Everything

Reservations can take away the freedom that makes van life special.

Instead » Leave open space in your itinerary for unexpected stops, food trucks, and hidden beaches.

5. Treating Maui Like the Mainland

This isn’t a place to rush, we treat each other with kindness and never use a car horn (unless it’s a friendly beep-beep + shaka to say hi!)

Instead » Drive slower. Be patient. Respect the land and local rhythm.

Your camper van trip experience is about exploring Maui in a way most visitors never do; ease into island life by slowing down, and enjoying the journey along the way as much as the destination!
